While having lunch at the Whiptail in Springdale, Utah just outside the entrance to Zion National Park I saw a trailer pull up, decked out in stickers being towed by a pickup truck with a bed full of 2×4 boards. The doors open and outstepped a man who looked like a cross between a more badass version of Tom Selleck and a woodshop teacher at a juvenile detention center, the type of guy who could break my neck with his mostache.
His name is Ron Werstler, and he is the world record holder for board breaking. For nearly 3 decades, Ron has been training as a martial arts expert. Board breaking is his specialty and on The Today Show, on September 22, Ron plans to break 200 2×4 boards in under an hour. If I were to attempt this I would only break two hands in about 45 seconds.
Ron isn’t just breaking stuff to do it, though that’s not a half bad reason either, he’s breaking boards to raise awareness for cystic fibrosis and to save his son’s life. This summer, Ron will be traveling to 49 states, raising funds, and smashing wood in an effort to raise $9 million to fund the transplants of children, like his son, who suffer from cystic fibrosis.
